Alvin Lee Small

February 16, 1957 — September 30, 2017

On February 16, 1957, a precious baby boy was born to the late LillieMae Hogue and the late William Small, Sr.; and they decided to callhim Alvin Lee Small. “Mule”, as he was called by friends and family, wasthe sixth of ten children born. Three brothers preceded him in death:Benjamin Hogue, Albert McCree and Clifton Thomas.Mule accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Olive M.B.Church in Bentonia, MS. He later joined Liberty M.B. Churchnear his home on Scotland Rd. Mule was educated at Gibbs High Schoolin Bentonia, MS. He began his career working at Desoto FurnitureCompany, where he worked for 8 years. After leaving this job, he decidedto try his hand at truck driving and found that this was what he wasmeant to do. Mule worked at W.S. Red Hancock for 13years and thentook a position with Madison County Road department, where he gave21 years of service. Upon meeting Mule, you would discover that he was a quiet andgentle man, with a heart of gold. He was loved by all that knewhim. He enjoyed watching football, sitting out at Sixteen’s Place, andbeing a member of the Delta Wolves truck club. Life became complete for Mule when he met the love of his life,Bernice (Wilkerson) Small, whom he continued to pursue, even afterbeing threatened by her fierce grandmother. They were joined in holymarriage on November 24, 1977 and shared 40 years of love together; tothis union God blessed them with one son, Ronald Lee Green. Entering into eternal rest on September 30, 2017, Mule leaves tocherish his beautiful memories: a loving and devoted wife, BerniceSmall; one son, Ronald (Angie) Green (Lapeer, MI); three grandchildren,Miracle Green (San Bernardino, CA), Terrance Strickland and CherishGreen (both of Lapeer, MI); devoted mother-in-law, Ruby Owens(Bentonia, MS); and step-mother-in-law, Pearlee Leamen (Flora, MS);seven brothers: Willie Holmes, Norman (Dorothy) Hogue, William(Patricia) Small, Jr., Charles (Priscilla) Small, and James Small (all ofBentonia, MS), L.C. McCree (Yazoo City, MS), and Donnie Hartman(Flora, MS); five sisters: Eddie Mae Patterson (Detroit, MI), Ella (Ervin)Sanders (Bentonia, MS), Vernicia Hughes (Milwaukee, WI), Rosie Davis(St. Louis, MO), and Olivia Bolden (Jackson, MS); six brothers-in-law:George, John, and Obey Wilkerson, Wade Owens, L.C. Patterson, andRichard Wilkerson; three sisters-in-law, Eula Wilkerson, Lucy Johnson,and Barbara Holmes; aunts and uncles: Norman Hogue and PleseWilkerson, Pecola Demus, Ethel Demus, and Eula Demus; two god-daughters, Desiree Small and Lateshia Scott; a special great-great nephew,Braylon “That Boy” Jones; special cousins, Lavarise Johnson and CressieMae Allen; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives andfriends.
