Mildred was born September 7, 1934, to the late John W. Green and Alberta Gray-Green in Yazoo City, MS. Mildred was
the 11th of 13 siblings.
Mildred gave her life to Christ at an early age at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend
Nathan Frazier. Mildred and her sister loved singing together at church during their early years of worship. In her later
years, she served faithfully as a devoted member of the Mothers’ Board of the church.
After graduating from high school, Mildred moved to Chicago, IL, where she spent the majority of her
adult life before eventually returning home. Shortly after moving to Chicago in 1955, Mildred was
married to the late Lucieus Charles Mitchell. From their union came four children:
Calvin, Carol, Charles, and Michael. She never remarried and devoted her life to her family,
faith, and loved ones.
Mildred was known for her quiet spirit and gifts in the kitchen. She was an excellent
cook, and no one could forget her sweet potato pies and cakes, which were the family
favorites and a true labor of love. She had a flair for fashion and always stepped out
looking polished, stylish, and beautifully put together, especially when attending
church. While Mildred enjoyed the comfort of home and preferred a peaceful, private
life, she made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mildred is preceded in death by her son Calvin, her granddaughter Latasha, her mother
and father, and 11 siblings: R.B., Freddie, Ola, Erman, Levester, Rachel, Robert, Ernest,
Bettye, John, and Granville.
She leaves to cherish her legacy: three children Carol/Ann (Lewis), Charles, and
Michael. Six grandchildren: Toymekia (Greg), Dawan (Vanecia), Cortiana, Charles,
DeCaree, and Taqueisha. Three great-grandchildren: Kwamaine, Elijah, and Tamera.
One sibling: Annie B., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mildred was
affectionately called “Tee” by most nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
